1. Research Statement

The formal and informal experiences of historically underrepresented student populations in engineering and computers are studied by Dr. Rodriguez utilising identity and critical frameworks. (Virginia,2022) Her research focuses on equity, access, and retention challenges, particularly those connected to intersectionality, the development of STEM identities, and wider oppressive structures. Her abilities include working with practitioners in a research-to-practice manner to improve results for Latina/o/x students and community colleges.(Sarah L.,2023)

2. Biography

​In her research, she concentrates on identifying and asking urgent questions about systemic inequities such as racism, sexism, and classism that marginalized communities experience as they transition to and through their engineering and computing higher education experiences.(Sarah L.,2023) At Virginia Tech, Sarah L. Rodriguez is an affiliate faculty member with the Higher Education Programme and an associate professor of engineering education. In her study, she focuses on identifying and posing pressing problems regarding structural injustices, such as racism, sexism, and classism, that marginalised people encounter as they enter and progress through their higher education experiences in engineering and computers.(ORCID,2023) As a gifted grant-maker, team leader, and collaborator, Dr. Rodriguez has gained a solid national reputation. She has worked together on ten substantial, multidisciplinary research projects worth a combined $20 million dollars that have been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Kapor Centre, and the Centre for the Study of Community Colleges.(Virginia,2022) She has written numerous book chapters and research/policy briefs in addition to 40 peer-reviewed articles that have appeared in journals like the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering, Engineering Studies, Journal of Hispanics in Higher Education, Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, and Community College Review. The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), Frontiers in Education (FIE), the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) are just a few of the national and state conferences that Dr. Rodriguez has presented at. She was chosen as a NASPA Emerging Faculty Leader as well as an Early Career Awardee and Faculty Fellow of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) in recent years. She also delivered the prestigious ASHE-CAHEP Barbara Townsend Lecture and was given the Barbara Townsend Early Career Scholar Award by the Council for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC).(Sarah L.,2023)
